Joel Morse – New York, Ontario & Western Railroad (N)

Concept:

  • The 541-mile New York Ontario and Western Railway (NYOW) operated from 1876 to 1957.
  • Modeled to represent the main line through Walton and Sidney and the Delhi Branch in 1954.
  • The layout features various industries, including dairy, coal, bluestone, farm products, and manufactured goods.

Design and Construction:

  • 150 square foot E-shaped folded dog-bone N-scale layout.
  • 10 hidden staging, 8 Stub-end and 2 through tracks for continuous running and point-to-point operations.
  • Scenery is partially complete with some areas fully scenicked.
  • Uses Code 80 Atlas flex track and hand-thrown Code 80 Peco turnouts.
  • Digitrax Simplex and Duplex throttles with mobile phone capability for train control.
  • Includes Cadosia and Norwich staging yards with tracks representing various regions.

Operations:

  • Walton Yard is central, handling traffic classification and building of locals, branchline trains, and interchange transfers.
  • Various train types including passenger trains, fast freight, and coal drags.
  • Utilizes Car Cards and Waybills along with a Form 19 Dispatcher system.
  • A typical session involves the Traffic Manager/Superintendent, Dispatcher, Walton Yardmaster, Assistant Yardmaster/Engine Hostler, and 4 road crews running 15 to 20 trains in 4 hours.

HOURS OPEN: 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE: Layout room is at ground level, but the layout is at 49″ and above. Wheelchair-bound visitors won’t see it.

PARKING: Street Parking, no restrictions.
